Seniors Unlimited Lifestyles, Inc. (SULI) is a 501(C) (3) non-profit organization based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The organization, founded in 2004 by Angela Whitehead, specializes in providing affordable and decent housing for the low income senior residents of the Hampton Roads area. Our goal is to provide quality housing for the elderly and disabled in a safe, secure environment. We assist the City of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and the surrounding areas in senior housing inventory.
In 2006 Virginia Community Development Corporation (VCDC), Richmond, Virginia, began working with SULI in the development of affordable housing for senior citizens. Other organizations such as The City of Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation (DHNP), Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) also assisted in the progress of this venture.
Seniors Unlimited Lifestyles, Inc. is committed to balancing its operating budget and operating costs on a solid financial foundation. These efforts are based on a mixture of fund-raising and charitable gifting. Revenues are tracked and internal expenses are closely monitored. SULI is intentionally emphasizing the need to look toward contributions from other sources, particularly the partnership with other agencies and businesses to support the program. This approach will enable the organization to realize the objective of keeping housing affordable while continuing to offer a quality living environment for all participants.
SULI spent several years searching for a location suitable for seniors and the disabled. In 2012 Community Housing Partners Corporation of Christiansburg, Virginia, partnered with Seniors Unlimited Lifestyles, Inc. to provide their construction, architectural and property management expertise in the development of an independent living, affordable apartment complex —Tranquility at the Lakes.
In 2016, SULI broke ground on its first facility located on Burton Station Rd. in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
In 2017, Tranquility at the Lakes, a 40-unit affordable, independent senior and disabled living complex was move-in ready.
The majority of low-income senior citizens have never lived in quality housing. Due to the lack of personal funds they have had to reside in an extended living environment. Many times these individuals have been victims of exploitation and abuse. Statistics show that elder abuse more times than not occurs in their living environment. Our seniors are the foundation of our community and have paved the way for us; in return, SULI is committed to making it possible for them to live out the remainder of their lives in a clean, safe, affordable environment with care and dignity.
